RESEARCH THAT BENEFITS

The wonderful world of research was a blessing for my family when my father was diagnosed with a form of cancer called Myelodysplasia. Myelodysplasia is a blood disease that attacks the white blood cells, causing extreme anemia and low blood counts. My father was only expected to live three months when he was first diagnosed in March of 2001. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of his Doctor, he lived three years. Throughout the three years my father under went numerous blood transfusions and overnight stays at the hospital. His body would often reject the blood from the transfusions that would cause him to have fevers and required longer stays in the hospital. My father's fight came to an end once his body was rejecting his transfusions more than it was accepting of it.
My family is grateful for all the efforts with cancer research, because of their gracious efforts my father was able to live longer than anticipated. Research is necessary in order to find cures for cancer and other life threatening diseases.

  1. Your father was a brave man. Not only is the research before him important and valuable but he also provided "data" in the length of time he was able to live through the use of the cancer treatments. While difficult for your father and family, his strength has given future cancer patients the hope that the diagnosis is not always an absolute. Thank you for sharing!

  2. Carla,
First, I would like to thank you for sharing such a personal subject. Research is necessary like you mentioned for the greater good of mankind. Again, thank you for sharing one of the most difficult subjects, however individuals like yourself are the ones who get others to understand the importance behind the research. Thank you!
